Not directly. Several of our instructors are consultants however.

SANS is committed to making its courses widely accessible. We can, for example, provide course notes electronically so they are compatible with screen readers. We can also provide extra seats to accommodate students' aids.

SANS Training Events

No. You are responsible for any costs associated with travel and accommodation.

Morning refreshments, a full lunch and an afternoon snack are included in the EMEA Training Event price.

Not necessarily. The final day of a 6-day course is often taken up with an all-day group exercise and that occasionally finishes in the early afternoon. We can't specify a particular time as it depends on the groups within the class. The course instructor will decide.

The quoted price when you register online for a training event covers all courseware and instructor fees plus lunch and morning and afternoon break snacks. Accommodation is not included. Choose a Training Event or an Online Course to see the specific cost for that course / event.

After you have registered for a course, send an email to and ask to have the tax removed. Be sure to include your order ID and VAT Number in the request. Please do so promptly after registering.

The deadline for applying for a refund is typically 6 weeks before a Training Event starts.

It is correct that organisations within the EU are exempt from VAT on training, if they provide a valid EU VAT number.

However, VAT law on the purchase of a registration for a SANS event is classed as purchasing admission into an event, and as such the VAT becomes payable.

SANS Institute, EMEA can only remove VAT for attendees that are based in the same country the Training Event is taking place (only applies to UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Czech Republic) or if you are VAT exempt.

VAT is payable for all registrations from other countries. Contact for further information.


Registration is completed online. If you know which Training Event or Course you wish to register for click here to select your options and register.

If you are not sure, first find the Training Event or Curricula you're interested in. Then select your course and click 'Register Now' (on the top right hand side of the screen).

SANS Institute, EMEA only send letters of invitation to students within Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) who have registered and paid in full for their training.

Yes, but only on the first day and only if there is space in the class that you would like to switch to. We allow students to scan course material to see if the course is a good fit. We recommend that you consider your training choice carefully in advance and contact SANS with any doubts before registering.

You will receive e-mail alerts in the run-up to your course. These will give you details of key locations, and requirements. The relevant training event webpage will also provide key information.

When you arrive at the training event on the morning of day 1, you need to register and pick up your badge. Photo ID is required. Registration is often in the training venue lobby.

If you are on Twitter, follow the event's hashtag (it'll be included in the pre-event emails and on the course's webpage). You'll receive advice, news and information about your event. See #SANSLondon as an example.

If you need to leave early, you will be given all of the courseware to take away with you. We of course recommend staying for the entirety of the training to ensure maximum benefit.


Anyone can attend a SANS course - there are no educational or professional requirements. We encourage students to master the basics before enrolling on advanced or specialist courses. See the online course descriptions for details.

Courses are designed to be independent of each other. Many do form connections within each Curricula moving from Core, to Advanced and Specialist.

SANS produces all Courseware. The same industry experts (often SANS Instructors), who created your course, write the textbooks and accompanying support material. SANS also makes many of the tool sets and virtualised resources you may receive.

Yes. You'll be awarded a CEU Certificate for each webcast you attend. Log into your SANS portal account, click on 'Account Dashboard' and then 'My Webcasts'.

Certificates of attendance for webcasts can be found by clicking on "My Webcasts" under "Account Details" on your account dashboard.


SANS and GIAC are independent organisations. You will notice as you read SANS course descriptions, many courses align with certain GAIC Certifications. This means that course is the ideal preparation for a GIAC Examination.

Silver is achieved after completing a multiple choice exam. To achieve Gold, candidates must submit - and have accepted for publication - a research paper.

Yes - either at the point of registration or after a Training Event. There are however stipulations about how soon after a Training Event you need to register to get a discounted rate, so act quickly.

Once purchased, the certification attempt is activated approximately 10 days after an event and it remains activated for 120 days. You may add the certification attempt after the 10 day period following an event however you wouldn't have the full 120 days access. Students are able to purchase an extension from their SANS portal accounts. If you wish to add a certification attempt to your training registration please email

They are separate accreditation bodies that focus on different criteria, and place different requirements on accreditation. They also operate different CPE schemes.

All credits are submitted as Type A credits.

The SANS Institute is not an accredited educational institution that issues transferable college credits.

Applicable SANS courses and GIAC Certifications can be worked into the Master's Program of SANS Technology Institute.

Check with individual colleges or universities to see if they will accept training credits from SANS Institute.

You earn 1 CPE credit for ISC2 per hour of SANS training. A conference usually lasts 6 days for 6 hours a day, which equates to 36 credits.

Students can earn CPE credits through Online Training, Training Events, and Private Training.

Naturally some papers are stronger or hold more community value than others. The best of the papers will also be in the Reading Room, although it is mostly made up of GSEC papers.
